How it’s calculated

Driving cost is fuel plus the per-mile cost of wearing out the vehicle, plus tolls and parking.

Fuel (gal) = miles ÷ mpg or Fuel (L) = km × L/100 km ÷ 100 Fuel cost = fuel × fuel price Wear = miles × wear rate Total = fuel cost + wear + tolls Reference amount = miles × reference rate

Example (default example rates): 100 mi at 25 mpg = 4 gal × $4.47 = $17.88; wear 100 × $0.25 = $25.00. Total = $42.88 ($0.43 per mile). At the IRS business rate of 76¢/mile the same 100 miles is $76.00.

The IRS standard mileage rate is meant to cover all the fixed and variable costs of operating a vehicle (fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration and depreciation), so it is usually higher than fuel plus wear alone. This calculator does not give tax advice: the rules on who may deduct mileage, and when, are set by the IRS. It also excludes insurance, registration, financing and parking you do not enter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IRS standard mileage rate?

For business use the IRS set 72.5¢ per mile for Jan. 1 – June 30, 2026 and 76¢ per mile for July 1 – Dec. 31, 2026 (70¢ in 2025). Check irs.gov for the current rate and the separate medical, moving and charitable rates.

What should I use for wear and tear?

Add up a year of maintenance, tires and repairs (plus depreciation if you want the full cost) and divide by the miles you drove. Without your own records, a few tens of cents per mile is a common starting point.

How do I charge customers for travel?

Many trades charge either the IRS rate per mile or a flat trip fee. Use the cost per mile here to check that your trip charge covers your real cost.

How do I convert L/100 km to mpg?

mpg (US) ≈ 235.2 ÷ L/100 km. For example, 8 L/100 km ≈ 29.4 mpg.
