How it’s calculated
A percentage score is the points earned divided by the points possible, times 100. The letter grade then follows the common ten-point scale.
| Score | Letter |
|---|---|
| 90% and above | A |
| 80% to < 90% | B |
| 70% to < 80% | C |
| 60% to < 70% | D |
| Below 60% | F |
Example: 43 out of 50 points = 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%, a B. Reaching 90% needs 0.9 × 50 = 45 points, i.e. 2 more.
Schools and instructors set their own cut-offs and plus/minus bands, so check your syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
Is 89.5% an A?
Not on a strict scale, but some instructors round to the nearest whole percent first. Check the course syllabus.
How do I combine weighted categories (homework, exams)?
Find each category percentage, multiply by its weight, and add. For example 0.4 × 90 + 0.6 × 80 = 84%.
Can the score exceed 100%?
Yes, if extra credit pushes points earned above points possible.
