How it’s calculated
Every length is first converted to meters (the SI base unit), then to the unit you choose. The inch is defined exactly as 25.4 mm by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, so:
Example: 10 km ÷ 1.609344 km/mi = 6.2137 mi; 6 ft × 0.3048 = 1.8288 m.
Frequently asked questions
How many centimeters are in a foot?
Exactly 30.48 cm, because 1 inch is defined as 2.54 cm and a foot is 12 inches.
How do I convert height in feet and inches?
Multiply feet by 12, add the inches, then multiply by 2.54 to get centimeters. For 5 ft 10 in: (5×12+10)×2.54 = 177.8 cm.
